2016 Walter Hansel Winery Chardonnay Cuvee Alyce

The 2016 Chardonnay Cuvee Alyce is scented of fresh grapefruit, pineapple and warm apricots with hints of chalk dust, fresh ginger, brioche and cashews. Medium to full-bodied, it packs in tons of opulent tropical and spice flavors, with a pleasant oiliness to the texture and a very long finish. 1,120 cases produced. $36

Winemaker Notes: The Cutrer is a rich, complex wine. On the nose, you are greeted with integrated oak notes of caramel, pie crust, apple pie, ripe peach, nectarine, nougat, brown sugar and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is nicely focused with a creamy mid-palate, bright acidity and a long, rich finish. Flavors of warm pie crust, fresh apple and pear are accented with touches of nut, light vanilla and baking spice. Each of Sonoma-Cutrer’s Chardonnays is unique in their flavor characteristics. 2016 Phelps Insignia Proprietary Red

Wine Spectator 95 Points: This is laden with dark currant, blackberry and black cherry preserve flavors, infused gently with alder, incense and black tea notes, all carried by a long swath of fine-grained tannins. Hints of warm stone and tobacco gild the finish.

Wine Advocate 97-100: A barrel sample made up of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec to be aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak, the 2016 Insignia Proprietary Red Wine has a deep garnet-purple color and is a little reticent at this still nascent stage (to be bottled in January 2019), opening out to reveal chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and black raspberries with touches of underbrush, cedar chest and bouquet garni plus a hint of grilled meat. Medium to full-bodied, the palate springs forth with exciting energy, offering loads of red and black fruit layers and compelling herbal sparks, featuring a firm, fine-grained backbone and bags of freshness lifting the finish. 13,500 cases are expected to be made. $310 (Arrives 9/5/19)

2016 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is still very tight and youthful, slowly unfurling to reveal a multifaceted wine with tons of black, blue and red fruit sparks—plums, cherries, black currants and red currants—with dark chocolate, cedar chest, black tea and red roses in the background plus wafts of pencil lead and prosciutto. Medium-bodied and firmly textured by superbly ripe, grainy tannins, it has a fantastic core of intense, complex layers, finishing on an edifying mineral note.
