Winery Notes:
The grapes for our Ballard Canyon Estate Syrah release are from the vineyards around the winery, located in beautiful Ballard Canyon. Situated in the larger Santa Ynez Valley appellation, Ballard Canyon has its own nuances and micro-climates that make it a near-perfect place for Rhone grape varietals such as Syrah. This bottling contains classic Ballard Canyon aromas of cassis and blackberry, with hints of licorice. Concentrated flavors of dried cherries, blackberries and cocoa mix with velvety tannins that linger on the palate.
Vinous

Dark red cherry, plum, spice, tobacco and leather all flesh out in this mid-weight Syrah. The 2018 feels a bit compact in this tasting. i would cellar if for a year or two. Today the 2018 Syrah comes across as focused, inward, but not too expressive. There is very good fruit density here, but beyond that the wine is not terribly revealing.

Focused aromas of elderberry and blackberry are spiced by licorice, white pepper and graphite on the ripe nose of this bottling, which includes 10% Petite Sirah. There is a thick presence to the palate, where heavy flavors of stewed berry, plum and smoked wood show.

Blackberries, plums, peppery herbs, and violet notes all emerge from the 2018 Syrah, a medium-bodied, fresh, focused Syrah with solid tannins and a good spine of acidity. It too is made in a more streamlined, elegant style, yet I like its balance and depth. It should have 7-8 years of longevity.
